Old Testament

The first recorded mention of Yahweh, the Jewish God Yahweh is found in an inscription that is related to King Moab around the time of the 9th century B.C. The theory is that Yahweh could have evolved from the god of the mountains Yhwh in the time of Seir and Edom.

Septuagint
Following the defeat of Alexander the Great, The Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek during the third century B.C.
Also known as the Septuagint, the Greek translation was created by king Ptolemy from Egypt to be added to the libraries of Alexandria. It was the Septuagint was the translation of the Bible that was used by the early Christians within Rome.
The Book of Daniel was written during this time and later was included in the Septuagint in the final moments however the text claims to be written in 586 B.C.
New Testament
As per Father George Rutler, The New Testament tells the story of Jesus’s life Jesus and the beginnings of Christianity, and Paul’s efforts to propagate Jesus his teaching. It contains 27 books, which were all created in Greek.
The chapters in the New Testament concerning Jesus are known as”the Gospels and were written around 40 years after the first written Christian documents, which were Paul’s letters. Paul is also known in the Epistles.
Paul’s letters were disseminated by churches around 50 A.D., possibly just prior to the time of Paul’s death. They copied his letters and put the letters in circulation. With the increase in circulation, the letters were put into books.
The Gospels
The oral traditions of the church were the foundation of the Gospels The earliest of the Gospels is Mark that was written about 70 A.D., 40 years after the death of Jesus.
Father George Rutler said it is believed that there could be an original written record of the sayings of Jesus called the Q source. This was then adapted to form the stories of the Gospels. The four Gospels were published in an anonymous form and historians believe they were published under the names of Jesus’ disciples to offer the reader direct connections to Jesus in order to give them more credibility.
Matthew, as well as Luke, were the next two on the timeline. Both of them used Mark as a reference however, Matthew is believed to be an additional source, referred to as M’s source because it has other material that is not found in Mark. Both books emphasize the evidence of Jesus His divinity more strongly than Mark did.
The Book of John, written in the year 100 A.D., was the last of the four and is renowned for its hatred towards Jesus’ Jewish contemporaries.
Each of the four books focuses on Jesus’s life Jesus with many resemblances, however, there are sometimes contradictions in their depictions. Each book is thought to possess its own particular religious and political agenda that is tied to its authorship.
As an example, both two books from Matthew and Luke offer different accounts of Jesus the birth Jesus and they all are in contradiction about Jesus’ resurrection.
Book of Revelation
The Book of Revelation is the final chapter in the Bible and is one of the apocalyptic works which predicts the end of the celestial battle through prophecy. The authorship of the book is believed to be that of John However, very little is known about the writer.
Based on the passage that was written about the year 95 A.D. on an island just off on the shores of Turkey. Some scholars believe that it’s not a prophecy but more an answer in response to the Roman demolishment of the Great Temple and Jerusalem.
The text is used by Evangelical Christians to interpret current events with the hope that of End Times, and elements of it are used frequently as part of popular media.
Marcion’s works focused on writing about the Gospel of Luke and the letters of Paul. The church was not happy with the work, and the Roman church banned Marcion.
Second-century Syrian writer Tatian attempted to develop a canon by connecting the four gospels in the form of the Diatessaron.
The Muratorian Canon, which is believed to be dated to around 200 A.D., is the first compilation of canonical text similar to that of the New Testament.
It wasn’t till the fifth century when all the various Christian churches reached an agreement in the 5th century regarding the Biblical canon. The books eventually considered canon is a reflection of the time in which they were adopted than the actual historical events they describe.
In the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, the books that were originally written in Hebrew however, but Greek-like Judith and Maccabees were removed from the Old Testament. These are called in the Apocrypha and are included as part of the Catholic Bible.
Gnostic Gospels
Other Biblical textual sources have also been found including The Gospel of Mary, which was part of the Berlin Gnostic Codex found in Egypt in 1896.
Another fifty unpublished Biblical texts were found within Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1945. They are referred to as Gnostic Gospels.
The most famous of the Gnostic Gospels was the Gospel of Thomas – which purports to be the previously unrecorded words spoken by Jesus shared with his twin brother. The Gospel of Philip, suggests a union among Jesus with Mary Magdalene. The texts in their original form are believed to be dating back to approximately 120 A.D.
