What is a flywheel gear?
The flywheel gear, which is connected to the crankshaft in the engine, is the name given to the gear wheel in the starter motor that provides the first movement in the engine. This gear, which is integrated into the edge of the flywheel, has a ring-shaped structure. This gear is located directly opposite the starter motor.
The Role of the Flywheel Gear
The flywheel gear, which combines with the bendix gear at the end of the starter motor, rotates the crankshaft in the engine by combining with the gear when the starter motor starts. Thus, the engine ignites and realizes the first movement. The flywheel keeps the crankshaft balanced by continuing to rotate during engine operation. This gear is also part of the flywheel that contacts the clutch motor and plays an important role in the power transmission between the transmission and the engine.
Working Principle of the Flywheel Gear
The flywheel gear used starts to rotate by engaging with the bendix gear at the end of the starter motor as soon as the ignition is turned. With the rotation of this gear, which is a part of the flywheel connected to the crankshaft, the crankshaft also rotates and the ignition in the engine starts.
With the engine running, the gear in the starter motor is automatically retracted. Although the flywheel is disconnected from the starter motor, it continues to rotate with the engine. Thanks to the tooth connected to the flywheel, the crankshaft runs stably. This reduces vibration in the engine and allows it to run smoothly.
What Material is the Flywheel Gear Made of?
Depending on the area of use, the flywheel gear must be manufactured from high quality materials for long-term use. The most commonly used material for the production of this gear is heat-treated steel.
When using alloy steel or carbon steel, heat treatment of these materials for the outer part of the gear makes it much more durable. For some engines, materials such as cast iron, brazier chrome and nickel alloys are also used.
Possible Problems in the Flywheel Gear
Problems that manifest themselves in the flywheel gear for various reasons can prevent the engine from working properly and shorten the life of the engine. As a result of prolonged use and overheating, problems such as wear and breakage of the gears may occur.
Increased backlash in the gears between the flywheel gear and the starter motor is the cause of the engine running noisily and the gear not rotating as it should. After high levels of torque and excessive load on the gear, problems in engine operation and non-rotation of the starter motor can be encountered. If the gear makes too much noise, this can be caused by incompatibility in the gears, problems between the starter motor and the gear.
